Unique Content That Builds Your SEO: What It Is & How To Get the Search Ranking Benefits

Potential clients often ask the question 'What exactly is Unique Content?' They know it’s vital for their SEO and to their ranking in Google and the other search engines. The problem is that it can be confusing to define. Does that mean you can’t write about the same subjects if your competitor already has? First, let’s deal with what Content actually is.

The answer is, first, that it depends on what you do and what your site is truly about. If you sell car parts, it’s content about cars and, even better, car parts. If you’re a therapist, it’s content about your services, maybe some background of your methods or informative articles concerning the therapy and conditions you treat.

WHAT MAKES CONTENT ‘UNIQUE’ TO GOOGLE?

Yes, it’s that simple. But what about that ‘Unique’ part? That just means ‘in your own words’. Or someone else’s if you’ve hired someone to write and create it. That’s where that unpaid labor we call Family & Friends might come in handy, by the way.

You don’t have to reinvent the wheel or come up with a brand new formula to qualify as Unique Content. For example, a lot of car repair sites will have articles on how to keep your car running well.

Most of those tips, not matter which car site you go to, are going to be similar or even the same. There’s a limited number of things you can do that truly help a car’s performance.

THE SEO STANDARD FOR UNIQUE CONTENT

The difference is that their write-ups are uniquely phrased. Go to the Self-Help section of any bookstore. A lot of self-help books have basically the same kind of content, they’re just written differently or have a different angle. That’s okay. That’s the standard you have to follow.

It just has to be different enough in the wording and phrasing that it’s not a carbon copy of what’s on another site. What’s the Difference Standard you have to pass? Some say 20% different, but that’s hard to define precisely. If you re-write and add your own observations or input, you are almost certainly okay.

One important rule, though: You MUST respect copyright issues & laws at all times. Do not steal content from another site word for word. One way to test the copyright problems is the YouTube Test.

If you could give a public speech using the wording in your content and then put it up on YouTube for all to see without worrying that you’re crossing copyright lines, you’re probably in the clear.

Unique content is everything from a list of your products or services to helpful information you offer to even your blog posts. Keep adding it on a regular basis and you will get ahead in the search engine race.
