Title Tags are often overlooked, despite their great importance in SEO. They are key to not only Google and search rankings, but to getting your prospect to click on your search listing when it comes up. The biggest mistake here is people always have the 1st purpose in mind – Search Engine Optimization -, but usually forget the 2nd. They forget or just don’t realize the role a Title Tag plays in getting customers from the search engines through their virtual door. One thing to clear up here. The Title Tag is the words or phrases that appear at the very top of the browser, changing according to the web page you’re currently on. The Title Tag is also what comes up as the heading for your search listing in Google. That placement is what makes it crucial that you put something there that will get the searcher to click on YOUR LISTING, not your competitor’s. How do you do this? You need to construct a Title that says accurately what the page is about. If you use keyphrases that don’t fit the content of the page, all you’re going to get is a visitor who leaves as soon as they figure that out. And they’ll figure it out fast. Therefore this tactic gets you nowhere, so stick to accuracy. You should use your keyphrases and keywords in the Title Tag, but don’t jam them in because you think it’ll boost your rankings. The space for your page title is not a bottomless well to be filled with keywords. There is a point where the SEO benefit falls off and you’re wasting space, time & effort. So, now that we’ve discussed some of the search engine optimization aspect, what do we mean about optimizing for sales? It means that you should construct a Title that reads clearly. Webpages that are made up of keyphrases thrown together can rank well. However, their rate of getting visitors to click thru and visit the site is often low. They forget that you must clearly communicate with the searcher, not confuse them. Here’s an example from my industry. Many listings you’ll see look like this in Google: SEO, Search Marketing, Online, Web Marketing, Webpages, Websites That says absolutely nothing. They’re just trying to rank for a bunch of different keywords. It’s unattractive, unprofessional and gives no compelling reason to click on that listing. Instead, it should be something like: SEO For Websites | Search Engine Marketing Services That is much clearer, smoother, much more pleasing to the eye. That is what you need to do to take your Title past just rankings and turn it into a salesman (or saleswoman) for your business. Remember, your site is not just for search engines, it has to reach the minds and even hearts of the human beings who are your customers.
