Is Black Hat SEO A Viable Option For Small Businesses?

2. It Can Be Profitable

Getting on the front page of Google for your industry defining keywords is almost always a lucrative position to be in, even if Google quickly brings you back down. This is certainly possible using less ethical SEO practices.

3. It Can Be Automated

There are a vast number of link building services that will carry out your spamming for you, and many of them are dirt cheap to hire. Even if you don’t outsource it, getting the processes automated within your own business isn’t as difficult as systematizing Hat White SEO.

Black Hat - The Cons

While Black Hat SEO is certainly very tempting for many businesses, there are more than a few disadvantages to it:

1. Success Is Brief

Google employs a lot of very smart people to do one thing and one thing only – eradicate spam from the Google index. This means that whatever black hattery you’re involved in, success isn’t likely to be long term.

2. You’ll Need Technical Know How

If you are doing all the SEO yourself, then you’ll need to have a greater than average technical understanding of SEO in order to stay ahead of the curve.

3. You Risk Search Engine Banishment

Google has an “innocent until proven a spammer” policy regarding spamming, as it’s speculated that once Google identifies a link as a spam link, it will simply devalue the value of that link with no negative affect attributed to your website. However, if you can be algorithmically traced back to be the source of spam, then Google may not take such a tolerant approach.

Conclusion:

If your small business involves hundreds of thin affiliate sites and you’re competing against other thin affiliate sites, then Black Hat SEO may have a place in your online strategy. However, for most small businesses (especially local ones) a pearly White Hat SEO strategy makes a lot more business sense – it’s long term, it’s brand enhancing and the effects are compound.
